Choosing the perfect desk chair

Back to articles

What actually makes a good chair? One that’s comfortable, reliable and most importantly, good for your posture. With so much choice available in the marketplace, it is more than possible to find a good ergonomic chair at an affordable price. You may have to spend a little in finding the perfect chair, though!

Firstly, search for all the chairs that offer the appropriate kind of support, such as those with armrests attached, are adjustable and those that improve your posture. A chair that can help with posture is one where the chair back covers your whole back and is curved towards the bottom to give lower back support. It should also have adjustable armrest and a back that can be tilted.

After, you need to filter out the chairs that don’t fit within your budget. You should read reviews for the remaining chairs to make sure they are really worth the price. Remember: the most expensive chairs aren’t always the best ones. For a good functional chair, search with terms such as “ergonomic” and “lumbar support”.

If it’s possible, then try out pre-assembled chairs in stores before you purchase them. The best chair will offer the proper back support and allows your arms and wrists to rest in a natural position.

A final few tips!

  • As a general guideline, appropriate seat heights for most people should be in the range of 16-21 inches from the ground. The appropriate seat width should be in the range of 17-20 inches. When trying the chair out, make sure your back is straight and that you can rest your feet flat on the floor.
  • Remember: no matter how good the chair, you should still take regular breaks, and ensure your circulation is good to avoid permanent health problems.
