Pros & Cons of Mesh Chairs

Back to articles

Mesh chairs are a relatively new addition to the office seating market, they may not look like the most comfortable chairs around, but in actual fact they offer some very useful benefits over their padded cousins.

The biggest advantage to a mesh chair is the greater airflow around the back of the chair. It may not look like a big deal but for those of you working in offices with no air conditioning, you’ll notice the difference almost immediately! The reason is that padded seats stores the heat from your body by trapping it in the back of the chair, this is why you can immediately tell if somebody has been sitting in the seat previous to you. The mesh allows that trapped air to circulate freely leaving a cool, pleasant sitting experience!

One of the concerns about mesh chairs is how much lumbar support they provide. In actual fact this shouldn’t be too much of a worry as by the nature of their design they are quite see through so you can tell instantly if lumbar support sections have been added!  Mind you, it is worth bearing in mind that in some cases the tension of the mesh around the chair frame can provide support in the correct areas so although it looks like no extra parts have been added, there are actually there by design.

Establishing whether the chair gives you enough support is perhaps then a tricky one, however when you think these designs are fairly new to the market, lumbar support is almost an automatic consideration for many designers so the chances are it is there whether it looks like it or not!
