Anglesey’s green sofa persuades couch potatoes to go outdoors
A ‘green’ sofa and coffee table have been built using over 20 hay bales covered in grass in Anglesey gardens.
The National Trust revealed that the average family in Wales spends 40 hours per week on the sofa. Furthermore, their research indicates that the average family spend 13 weeks annually (or 1.5years over a lifetime) just sitting down. Despite this, over three quarters of parents admit that they would like to get involved with more outdoor activities as a family.
So, inspired by their founder, Octavia Hill, who sought to construct outdoor sitting rooms for everybody to enjoy, they chose to install seating in their gardens, in order to encourage families to go outdoors.
The sofa installed in Plas Newydd is still growing, and the visitor manager, Richard Williams, confirmed that the sofa had been popular with the locals.
He added, "People seem to absolutely love it. The first day it was put in, we had a whole gang of children jumping all over it. They were amazed how comfortable it is, and how it's constructed."
The idea is to move the sofa to another location in Wrexham next weekend, but it’s become a logistical challenge, as the grass has grown on top of the hay bales and a big tractor would be required to move it.
“And we're even thinking of growing our own permanent sofa in the gardens.” Mr Williams said.
