Pensioner angry over lack of seating at local Morrisons

Geoff Emerson, a disabled pensioner, has accused the supermarket in Hatfield of “shameful treatment” of customers with mobility problems.

The management of the Morrisons store removed a seating area and was meant to replace it with a bench. However, it’s been 5 months since the removal, and there is no sign of the bench.

The 72 year old pensioner suffers from emphysema and has severe back problems, so is therefore unable to walk long distances and is almost housebound.

Each week, he takes his only regular trip out to the Morrisons store with his wife, who shops while he sits in on the small row of seats near the store entrance. Now, he and others with mobility problems, are left to stand.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “Due to the lack of room behind the checkouts, the seating was removed.

“However, customers are welcome to use the seating area, provided in the adjacent cafe.”

Mr Emerson says, "I think it’s absolutely shameful. If they don’t want the elderly or disabled there, we’ll go somewhere else."
