Prolonged sitting prevents you from burning fat
A study published in ‘Diabetes’ journal reveals that sitting for long periods of time causes your body to switch off it’s fat burning enzyme, lipase.
The researchers carried out an experiment on rats and pigs, whereby they injected a little radioactive fat into their bodies so that they could trace where the fat went. The researchers observed that in the animals that were kept stationary, the fat moved from the blood vessels and into adipose tissue in organs such as the kidneys. Fat is more easily burned in blood vessels than it is in adipose tissue.
Furthermore, it was found that when animals were kept stationary for quite a few hours, the levels of lipase (the enzyme that breaks down body fat) present in the body was reduced to a measly 10% of normal levels! Repeating this experiment on humans, where participants sat for hours, researchers found similar results. Suppression of lipase, experts warn, can lead to increased levels of cholesterol, reduced metabolism and increased fat retention in the body.
The research claims that for people who spend a large proportion of their day sitting, such as an office worker, exercising more is not sufficient to lose weight. Experts are advising these people to regularly stand up and move about the office.
